People flock to LA for many different reasons. Some come here to be discovered, others want to be invisible amongst the sea of people on the beach. Some come to start businesses, go to school, or start something new. But a lot of people come to West LA to raise a family, and it’s a great place to do it.  


If you’re moving to LA with kids, check out some of these awesome family-friendly activities to try that the whole family will love: 


Descanso Gardens 

If you've got kids with energy to burn(who doesn't?) Descanso Gardens Is a great option for some outdoor playtime. The gardens offer gorgeous shaded walkways, incredible natural gardens, Outdoor art galleries, and a mini train that takes young visitors through some of the gardens near the promenade. There is a gift shop and cafe on-site, making it a great place to have an outdoor playdate or Have an impromptu science lesson on botany, horticulture, biology, ecology, and conservation.

Kidspace Children’s Museum 

The Kidspace Children’s Museum is a place where kids of all ages can explore, play and learn. Kids of all ages will love exploring all of the hands-on exhibits, and parents will love the fact that they don’t even realize they’re learning. Some of the museum's most popular exhibits include:  


  • Apple Tree House & Pulley System 

  • Butterfly Lifecycle 

  • Imagination Playground 

  • Jesse’s Train Station 

  • Mechanical Waterplay Area 


Families can spend hours exploring the levels of exhibits. You can also reserve areas of the museum for a private playdate, host a birthday party here, and take part in many of the weekly and monthly family-friendly events.

Wildlife Learning Center 

The Wildlife Learning Center is another great activity for kids and families that love animals. Their mission is to “Provide a nurturing environment for animals where visitors can build upon their natural curiosity for animals” and they do this in several ways. Along with countless animal exhibits to see, there are group and animal experiences that allow visitors to interact with some of their favorite animals. From sloths and chinchillas to owls and snakes, this is a must-do for your little animal lovers.

Moonlight Rollerway 

Treat your kids to the joys of a good old fashioned roller rink at Moonlight Rollerway. An iconic piece of LA history, this classic roller rink offers classes for kids and adults, themed nights, and a snack bar with all of your favorites. Host a birthday party or playdate here, or schedule a skating lesson with a private instructor. Great for rainy days and weekends, the Moonlight Rollerway is a must!

Shane's Inspiration 

There are hundreds of playgrounds across LA, but very few like Shane’s Inspiration. This all-access playground was designed for kids of all abilities to play, swing, slide and explore. Designed to accommodate kids of all abilities, this safe and colorful playspace features wide sidewalks, secure rubber surfacing, equipment designed for upper body use, wheelchair-height sand tables, accessible swings, and more. Playing here allows all kids to feel included, and what’s better than that?

West Los Angeles Regional Branch Library 

For families that value books, reading, and imagination, the West Los Angeles Regional Branch Library is a great way to spend an afternoon. Along with an incredible children’s library, this branch has weekly events geared toward kids of all ages. From storytime and homework help to teen events and book clubs, the local library is a great free resource for LA families.
